Diversity and Success in Research
Our research portfolio is exciting and diverse. It encompasses not only the five main language areas of our constituent Units, but also art history, critical theory, literature, linguistics, film, history, medieval studies, philosophy, sexuality and gender studies, and applied and literary translation.
Our staff are experts in their fields and supervise students across a wide range of subjects (see staff profiles). The most recent Research Assessment Exercise classified an average of 86% of research across Modern Languages units as internationally significant or above.

- 1 AHRC studentship for Masters programmes in European Languages and Cultures or Sexuality and Gender Studies
- 1 AHRC studentship for the MA in FIlm Studies
- 1 AHRC studentship for PhD French
- 1 AHRC studentship for PhD Italian
- 1 AHRC studentship for PhD Russian
- 7 PhD bursaries
