The Centre
for Research into Film Studies (CRIFS)
The
Centre for Research into Film Studies (CRIFS) at the University of Exeter
was established in 1998. Located in
SALL, its aim is to provide an interdisciplinary research forum for research
staff, academics, postgraduates and film practitioners. It encourages the
interfacing of film theory and practice. To that effect, external speakers in both academia and creative
industries are regularly invited to give papers, presentations and host
workshops.
The
Centre hosts a number of activities:
- CRIFS research seminars: every
fortnight during term time for the presentation of new research by staff
and postgraduates.
- Filmcrum: based on
the successful recruitment over past three years of postgraduates onto the
new PhD in Film by Practice (figures currently stand at 10 PGRs), we have
set up a research think tank unit directed by Prof Susan Hayward, Dr Will
Higbee and Prof Don Boyd (Honorary Professor of Film Studies). PhD Film
Practice students meet once a fortnight with our two Filmmakers in
Residence (John Sealey and Jonnie Williams) to discuss various aspects of
their current research and filmmaking.
- Honorary Professors: Currently
we have two Honorary Professors in Film:
Don Boyd and Nic
Roeg.
- Visiting Speakers: Film
Studies regularly welcomes visiting speakers: both academics and
practitioners working within the film industry. Recent visiting speakers include:
screenwriter Tim Clague, editor Andy Ward, Professor Paul Pickowitz,
director and producer Don Boyd and actor/director Peter Ellis
