Research Specialisms

Dr Sally Faulkner welcomes enquiries about postgraduate supervision (MRes, MPhil, PhD) in all areas of Spanish cinema, especially: film under Franco, film and literature (literary adaptations), and film and television.

Literary Adaptations

My research in this area draws on Cultural Studies to address the ideological questions raised by screen adaptations of Spanish literary texts. It includes work on well-known adaptations, such as Luis Buñuel's Tristana and Nazarín, and also draws attention to adaptations which had received little scholarly attention. This includes work in the brand new field of Spanish television through analysis of Fortunata y Jacinta (Mario Camus) and La Regenta (Fernando Méndez Leite).

Art Film under Franco

I am particularly interested in the ‘Nuevo Cine Español' - the politically-engaged film movement that arose in the last years of the Franco dictatorship. My approach examines in detail wide political contexts, as well as specific production contexts, in films such as La tía Tula (Miguel Picazo) and La caza (Carlos Saura).

Spanish Popular Cinema

My research addresses popular cinema from the dictatorship era. Previously dismissed as pro-Franco, I argue that films like La gran familia (Manuel Palacios) should be reconsidered as both technically proficient, and occasionally subversive, especially through the contribution of star actors.

Current Research Project

I am writing a history of Spanish cinema to be published by Continuum, New York.
