Call for Papers
Inaugural SALL Postgraduate Research Conference
University of Exeter
13-14 May 2010
On the 13-14th of May 2010 the inaugural SALL Postgraduate Research Conference will be taking place at the University of Exeter. The aim of the conference is to develop dialogue between researchers (both staff and students), explore and encourage interdisciplinary projects, and provide a space where the current postgraduate research in SALL can be discussed in a serious, but enjoyable and relaxed environment. This promises to be a great chance to practice your presentation skills and receive feedback on your research. We are now accepting submissions for papers, panels, performances, and installation work from all SALL research students. If you have previously submitted an abstract could you please confirm that you'd still like to present, or whether you would prefer to amend your proposal.
The conference is divided into four broad sections which we hope the majority of researchers in SALL will be able to respond to - Space, Identity, The Body, and Language. We leave it up to you to interpret one or several of these themes as you see fit; the only stipulation is that papers should not exceed twenty minutes (panel proposals should aim for three 20 minute papers and 30 minutes for questions). Over the two days there will be more limited opportunities for performances, workshops, and longer sessions on each evening for which we welcome any suggestions. In the conference space there will also be ample opportunity to display installation work.
Examples of the kind of work we're looking for include:
- Traditional twenty minute presentations of work.
- Recordings of film or audio for installation.
- Interdisciplinary panels.
- Dramatic performances.
- Workshops.
- Readings of creative work.
- Poster representations of research for installation (A3 size).
- Printouts of creative writing for installation.
- Respondents panels (papers circulated in the weeks prior to the event).
While typical paper presentations are expected to make up the majority of the conference, what you do with your 20 minutes, or longer performance slot, is entirely up to you, and non-traditional presentations are encouraged if they are the best way to express your work. Abstracts for papers should be 200-300 words; installation work only requires an expression of interest. You can apply to be a part of multiple aspects of the conference.
The closing deadline for abstracts is Friday 12th February 2010.
We aim to acknowledge all submissions within 7 days of receipt and to provide details regarding schedules, space, etc. by Friday 19th 2010.
